Bacon and Tomato Quiche Recipe

For the crust, I pre-made them when I was making my apple pie the other day. To get the recipe for the crust, refer HERE

You can make the crust earlier or on the day itself. Earlier would means preparing the crust in the pie-tin or relevant containers and covering them up with aluminium foil in the fridge until needed. I made these a few days ago and they seemed to taste better after a few days in the fridge probably because I made the crust a little too wet from too much milk for my pie previously and their time in the fridge just dry out the crust properly to the correct texture. LOL. If you made the crust properly, make sure you seal them to ensure they don't dry out too much.

For the filling, I used a few simple ingredients only.

Ingredients:
3 eggs (large)
1/2 cup full fat milk
1 big onion  (cut into thin rings)
6 slices of streaky bacon (chopped)
2 medium tomato (sliced)
3 slices of processed cheddar (You could probably use grated cheese but I do not have them)
A small handful of fresh sweet basil (I do not have dried ones and I have fresh ones growing) or 1 tsp of dried basil
A tsp of dried thyme
Pinch of salt and pepper

Method:
1) Bake the crust at 190-200degrees Celsius for about 10 minutes. Not ncessary to brown them. If you have weights, place them on baking sheet in the crust to prevent uneven crusts. Otherwise, I think the rustic look works fine especially for home-cooks. PS: Remember to prick your crust before baking them or if you prepared them ahead of time, prick them before freezing them.
2) Heat up wok/pan. Without using any oil, put all the chopped bacon inside and brown them slightly. Add the onions and stir well until both are nicely golden brown.
3) Remove from heat.
4) Beat up the eggs and milk together with salt, pepper and thyme. Add the dried basil here if you are using it but if fresh basil are used, sprinkle over the quiche later.
5) Line the bottom of the pie crust with cheese and pour the egg mixture over it.
6) Top with sliced tomatoes and sprinkle the fresh basil leaves over them.
7) Bake for 30-45 minutes (until toothpick came out clean) at 190degrees.

Excuse my rather clumsy looking crust as they are from leftover pie crusts used in another recipe

Tokyo Secret Hanjyuku Cheese Tart, 1 Utama

The latest craze in KL, Tokyo Secret recently opened with a bang of crusty tarts and decadent cheesy filling~ The queue to get this RM7.90 tart was surprisingly long but upon closer inspection as they were baking only a tray each time, I guess that's understandable. Whether to ensure the freshness of the tarts or to make sure there's always a crowd in front, I can't be sure. Hehe!

That aside, I simply love the creamy, cheesy filling and its buttery, flakey crust. It was worth every expensive cents. Hehe.

They provide a card to show how their tarts could be enjoyed but I seriously doubt anyone would wait that long to consume the yummy, warm tarts which are packed straight from the oven.
LOL! In case you do try them out after it cools down in the fridge, let me know!

The branch I went to is located here:

Tokyo Secret Malaysia – Japanese Hanjyuku Cheese Tart
2nd Floor High Street
One Utama Shopping Mall
(opposite to Haagen Dazs)

but Google showed that they have another branch at Ikano Damansara located at:

Tokyo Secret Malaysia
G23, IPC Shopping Centre,
Jalan PJU 7/2 Mutiara Damansara,
47800 Petaling Jaya,
Malaysia.

The one in IPC Shopping Centre boasted more choices in terms of delectable desserts and you could be in for a treat from ice creams to Japanese-inspired cakes.

New Fortune City Cafe, Miri

If you are looking for excellent Curry Fish head in Miri, look no further. This shop offers one of the best Fish Head Curry I have ever had. Granted, service was not the best (especially if you asked them to clear a table for you) but for the quality of food here, I guess I could take that kind of attitude. They even had some lady complaining in Miri Community or some forum a while back but I digress. Anyway, the servings were huge and the price was reasonable. At about RM40 for this huge claypot below, it feeds 3 comfortably and even 4 I think. They gave plenty of fish and the vegetables were more than generous. The broth was rich and the spice level was adequate to suitably give you some sweat but not fiery until you get tummyache soon after.

The vegetable we ordered was the fried mani vegetables with egg. It was quite big as the waiter recommended a RM10-plate. We could barely finish a quarter of it after the huge claypot of fish above. So, I would recommend getting a small plate of vegetables if you insist on some greens. Otherwise, just forgo it altogether and concentrate on getting the fish head curry cleared.

I did not have the photos of their Fish Head Noodles or their Yong Tau Hu here but I would really recommend it. The fish head noodles was just RM12 but if you are not feeling really famished, then sharing it with a friend would be wise. The fish portions were generous and their yong tau hu were really tasty. Slightly better than their competitor right next to them. LOL.

Look for them at:

Mr Tuk Tuk, Sunway Pyramid

Saw this adorably quaint cafe newly opened at Sunway Pyramid just a few days ago and went in for a try with my Hubby. Initially we ordered drinks but were kindly told by their waitress about the free drinks our sets actually came with. I like them already! Anyway, turns out the free drinks were actually mango juices (albeit a bit watery but it's free so cannot complain-lah). And we were actually planning to order their banana-mango juice anyway so LUCKY LUCKY!

I really like this set I ordered. In my opinion, getting their set is probably the best way to taste all their available dishes. For this current one pictured below, I get two pieces of their Pandan Chicken, a serving of their mango kerabu (I think) and some sort of Thai inspired chicken fillets. A nice heap of pineapple fried rice to fill up my stomach too!

I think their Pandan chicken were amazing. They included sesame seeds inside the fragrant packets of screw-pines leaves along with tender chicken breast. I dislike those packages of Pandan chicken where the meat were mixed in with lots of fats and skin but not the case here! Yay! Their dipping sauce were delicious too as they sprinkled some peanut powder on top making it rather distinctive compared to other Thai shops.

The mango kerabu was excellent too! They used liberal amount of fish sauce (and if you think it's not enough, a whole bottle is available on each table as well). The crispy kerabu and tangy sauce goes together so well, nicely balanced out by a packful of bird's eye chillies. Fuh! My eyes were watering when I accidentally chewed on one.

The pineapple fried rice were quite nice with lots of pineapples and cashew nuts mixed into the turmeric-laced rice. I however, do not really fancy the amount of chicken sausages used to fry it. I would think some nice slices of chicken or maybe even prawns makes better substitute. Heh! It is not bad though and deserved plenty of thumbs-up.

PS: If you noticed, I did not talk much about the chicken chop/fillet with Thai sauce. It was not impressive but overall, the whole dish warrants an 7.5/10

This is another set they offered. I did have a taste of everything except the beef salad which was very, very spicy according to Hubby but quite delicious. As I couldn't tolerate a lot of heat, I decided to forgo that and take his word for it.

The stir-fried vegetables were quite delicious even if it was not something very special to have. LOL. I like it,~

The basil chicken mince on the other hand was quite pungent, and definitely had lots of basil in them. If you like basil, this would definitely be a favourite. I do not really fancy that much Thai basil in my food, therefore I had a 50-50 opinion on this. Granted, the meat was well-seasoned and all, but somehow the basil threw off my game. If I had to give it any points, most would probably come from the vegetables > . < I guess a 6/10? Haha

I was definitely glad I ordered the set I did. Oh and they had this RM1 promotion for their ice cream. I was interested but was too full to try them. Hubby on the other hand seemed rather reluctant to give them a go. What do you think?

So here's me taking advantage of their free props available on each table. Heh!

Salt & Pepa, Miri

This is probably one of the worst experience I could have sampling cafes in Miri. Granted, I only tried their coffee and cakes but those alone were not very impressive; more towards disgusting.

The cafe actually looks alright; until when I was walking to place my order at the counter and saw a big cockroach running around. Granted, the server and waiter tried to kill it and was successful after a few strenuous moments.

The cockroach was roaming right in front of the counter's floor.

Undeterred, I placed my order for a chocolate cake and a lemon cream cheese frosting cake alongside a latte and mocha. The drinks were not bad but the cakes were simply disappointing.

The lemon butter cake was a little underdone and the cream cheese frosting were disgusting, reminding me of the bad smel of vomit. 😨😨😨

The chocolate cake was also underdone and the frosting was not made of good quality chocolate, lending a rather sugary texture which does not reflect any rich chocolate flavours we would associate with a chocolate cake.

I wouldn't recommend this cafe for their cakes at all but I guess it's all up to you. :)

Restoran Sek Yuan, Pudu

Tucked away in a corner of KL is this dated famous restaurant. Despite the changes in the city, this restaurant managed to retain much of its old-world charms. The only difference would probably be that they have expanded to include an air-conditioned wing in a shoplot right next to the original. Needless to say, we chose the air-conditioned one for our dinner. It was a very hot night OK? :P

If you are not looking for it, this restaurant could be easily missed. The shop's name was not exactly well-lit and it was tucked into a small dark alley. The lit-up small "name-plate" was really easily missed from the main road especially if you are not going at a low speed.

What did I say? Old-school charms. Check out their assorted memorabilia from different times in the past. I love their bamboo-themed bar *slash* counter.

This is the non-air-conditioned wing or outlet. It is actually right next to the air-conditioned one so if you would prefer the original setting, this would be the one you need to go into. :P

We started off with the usual nuts (not sure if it's complimentary). The broad nuts were nyum and crunchy, but I guess you could probably get any of these from the usual supermarket-packed ones.

LOL. Yes, I must take photo of every single thing I consumed. LOL. It's Chinese Tea in case you missed it. :P

The Pi-pa duck here was AMAZING! Crispy skinned duck with flavoursome tender meat, paired with sweet plum sauce. We couldn't get enough even though it's half a duck between the three of us!

The fried (fake) shark's fin is actually fried vermicelli with egg. I love this dish even though I still think my aunt made an even better one! Haha. It's not as salty as I would like but the fragrance from the "wok-hei". We didn't bother eating it much with the lettuce even though we were supposed to.

The stir-fried vegetables was also pleasant but it was not as out-of-this-world as the rest.

Overall, I feel this restaurant deserves a visit; if just for the atmosphere alone.

Haya Don @ Wisma Cosway, KL

A pretty good economical Japanese-styled food. They mostly specialized in bowls of rice hence their Don in the name of the shop. I would say for RM9.90 a bowl, this is a value-buy. The ones below are the spicy chicken rice bowl which is their special for Tuesday if I remembered correctly. Each weekday has a different special and they are all priced at about RM9.90.

The spicy chicken rice was quite delicious. The bowl is packed full of rice and topped with spicy fried chicken which was quite crispy and had some spicy mayo drizzled over them.

I actually went back the following week with my colleagues and I felt that this shop could be a potential regular spot for lunch, especially if you are working in the area.
